Postscript from the Senior Organizer and Manager of the Third Volume Mažosios Lietuvos enciklopedija

We are pleased to see arival of volume three of MLE, and at the same time celebrate the tenth anniversary of work on preparing and publishing the encyclopaedia. As the initiator, organizer and manager of the encyclopaedia I am inexpressably happy with the fruit of everyone’s efforts and labours, Our work can be used not only by the descendants of people from Lithuania Minor but also by all Lithuanians, our friends and those devoted to studying our past grandeur.

This volume, which has been drafted laboriously, will enable readers to glimpse the past and present lives of people from Lithuania Minor, and assess their participation in public and private life. The wealth of illustrations will help readers appreciate the special way of life of people in this Lithuanian coastal region and their carefree childhood and school years.

When editing this volume we were stunned by the wealth of material available, including many images and articles from the Polish-occupied western part of former East Prussia, far from the places where Lithuanians lived or worked. We did not manage to unite appropriately the articles of variuos authors everywhere. It was difficult to cope with publication of a huge work due to the MLE organizers’ nonnumerous efforts.

Despite all this and other hidden faults, the third volume is marvel in its size and the variety of ways in which it presents the past of Lithuania Minor to readers. The heritage of the Lietuvininkai and Prussians reveals the ancient Baltic culture of our land, which formed part of Old European culture.

Slavic novelties imposed by the Soviets have not taken root and will remain alien to the descendants of Lithuania Minor and their neighbours in the European Union.

The editor-in-chief of MLE, Dr Martynas Purvinas, and the architect Marija Purvinienė have made great efforts to collect material from German archives. Thanks to their efforts the volumes of this encyclopaedia have been complemented with rare illustrations and valuable articles.

I offer my respect and thanks to all those working on MLE.

Senior Organiser and Manager of MLE, Former Chairman of the Board of Lithuania Minor Foundation, Deputy Chairman of the Lithuania Minor Foundation

Schlusswort Zum III.
